The History of All Secure Self Storage
In 1999 Keith Edwards was on holiday in Australia, when he saw the opportunity that Self Storage, or Mini Storage in Australia, offered. Meanwhile, Peter James had read about the same opportunity in Robert Kiyosaki’s book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad. At Keith’s instigation, this lead to the purchase of land in Lower Hutt, for the development of a self storage facility. Before building commenced, Keith went to the Self Storage Association of Australasia Gold Coast Conference, and while at the Conference he meet our current software providers StorMan, our current builders Storco, and also had his carefully designed plans ripped up and redesigned by Sam Kennard of Kennards Self Storage, over a beer at the bar.
Now with 3 Families involved; The Edwards Family, The James Family and Lancaster Family, building commenced in 1999, of the Lower Hutt facility on Cambridge Terrace Naenae. The facility opened in February 2000 with minimal signage, no EftPos, no internet, and just the Yellow Pages for advertising. The Lower Hutt Facility has since been expanded twice to now have a total of 523 units.
In endeavouring to expand the business, in late 2001 the Edwards Family and the James Family bought out the Lancaster Family. This was followed shortly by the purchase of land in Christchurch in early 2002, then a land purchase in Paraparaumu in 2007, and the acquisition of an existing facility in Onehunga in 2009.
In 2003 the Christchurch facility at 94 Carmen Road was opened. The facility was the first built by Storco for All Secure, and has had 3 further stages added. The Christchurch facility currently has 555 storage spaces, with the potential for the development of a further 400 units on the area currently used for car and boat storage.
With the purchase of land in 2007 at Paraparaumu, designs were prepared for a state of the art drive-through Self Storage facility of which All Secure now has 2. The 1st stage of the development of the Kapiti facility on Epiha Street, Paraparaumu was opened for its first client in September 2008 and has had 2 of the 3 final stages completed, to now offer 577 units and indoor vehicle parking also available.
July 2009 saw the exciting expansion of All Secure Self Storage into the Auckland suburb of Onehunga, giving us a national presence in the 3 main centres. The All Secure Onehunga facility is also a drive-through self storage facility with a total of 332 units and outside Vehicle parking. This was All Secure’s first acquisition of an operating facility and the fourth facility for the company.
The 2010’s have seen the continued growth of All Secure. In 2012 the development of All Secure’s second Auckland facility was completed, and 2014 saw the acquisition of existing facility in Taupo and in 2015 the acquisition of another existing facility, in Wanganui.
2012 saw the opening of All Secure Auckland Airport on Tidal Road, Mangere. This build was our first conversion of an existing building in to a self storage facility, and our first to offer 3 loading bays for customers to use, for the unloading and loading of their property. This facility has seen 2 of 3 stages completed with a total of 447 units plus outside vehicle parking.
In November 2014, All Secure completed the purchase of the Alcatraz Self Storage centre in Tauhara Rd, Taupo. This gave All Secure its first true regional facility. All Secure has kept the Alcatraz Self Storage name, incorporating it into the All Secure brand, until the completion of the expansion of the facility. All Secure Alcatraz Taupo has 211 units and some outside vehicle parking with plans to expand the facility to 350 units and 35 covered boat parking spaces.
Mid 2015 saw All Secure complete the purchase of the Kennards Self Storage facility in Wilson Street, Wanganui. The facility is a well-established centre in Wanganui, and All Secure has completed the rebranding of the facility, which included the exterior painting of the office, new signage and a refit of the office/packaging shop. All Secure Wanganui has a total of 344 units plus the vehicle parks. At this point, All Secure has 7 facilities nationwide, providing over 3000 units and vehicle parks, for our customers.
2017 saw All Secure Self Storage’s first venture into the Hawkes Bay. The development of this branch is a conversion of an existing building into a self storage facility, and we expect this new facility to be open during November 2017. This branch will be a state of the art, drive-through, all weather self storage facility, the first of this style in Napier. All units will be under cover and out of the weather, unlike traditional self storage facilities. The facility will have 400 units available after the completion of stage 1, and a total of over 550 units as well as covered vehicle and boat storage, once fully completed.
